Hope Enterprise is a community development financial institution that provides a substantial number of low-wealth people and communities with the financial tools and resources needed to achieve a better quality of life. For more than 20 years, HOPE provides affordable, responsible financial products and services to families and businesses across the Mid South.

In 1995, Bill Bynum founded the organization as Hope Community Credit Union based out of Anderson United Methodist Church in Jackson, Miss. Bynum wanted to provide a better option for members of his community – many of whom were dependent on predatory payday lenders and pawn shops for financial services. After initially relying on church volunteers to maintain operations, over time, more churches joined HOPE, tripling the credit union membership to over 2,700. In 2001, Bynum made the Enterprise Corporation of the Delta (ECD)—a business loan fund he had organized to create jobs in the Mississippi Delta—the primary sponsor of Hope Credit Union. Today, it is a federally chartered CDFI with over30,000 members from across the Southern U.S. The majority of Hope Credit Union’s members come from disadvantaged communities. The Mississippi territory where HOPE was founded contains one quarter of America’s most persistently impoverished counties, where the poverty rate has exceeded 20%for three decades in a row. Eighty-one percent (81%) percent of HOPE’s membership are minorities and52% come from households earning less than $35,000 per year. Additionally, over 1/3 of HOPE’s members were unbanked when they joined Hope Credit Union. With HOPE, Bynum has given thousands of Americans necessary financial services for the first time in their lives.

Vivek maru profile bio photo hi res croppedNamati envisions a world where the power of law resides in the hands of people. They want a world in which laws and policies reside not only in books or courtrooms, but also on the land, in the home, and within the grasp of every person. Namati is building a global movement of grass roots advocates who give people the power to understand, use, and shape the law. Legal empowerment advocates treat their clients as empowered citizens rather than victims. Instead of “I will solve this problem for you,” the message is: “We will solve this together, and you will grow stronger in the process.

Namati works in three ways: grassroots innovation, global network, and research and advocacy.

Vivek Maru founded Namati in 2011 to grow the movement for legal empowerment around the world. Namati and its partners have built cadres of grassroots legal advocates– also known as “community paralegals”–in eight countries. The advocates have worked with over 40,000 people to protect community lands, enforce environmental law, and secure basic rights to healthcare and citizenship. Namati convenes a community of 550+ legal empowerment organizations from all over the world who are collaborating on common challenges and learning from one another. This community successfully advocated for inclusion of access to justice in the new global development framework, the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. From 2003 to 2007, Vivek co-founded and co-directed the Sierra Leonean organization Timap for Justice, which has been recognized by the International Crisis Group, Transparency International, and President Jimmy Carter as a pioneering model for delivering justice services in the context of a weak state and a plural legal system. From 2007 to 2011, he served as senior counsel in the Justice Reform Group of the World Bank. His work focused on rule of law reform and governance, primarily in West Africa and South Asia. In 1997-1998 he lived in a hut of dung and sticks in a village in Kutch, his native place, working on watershed management and girls’ education with two grassroots development organizations- Kutch Mahila Vikas Sanghatan and Sahjeevan. Vivek graduated from Harvard College, magna cum laude, and Yale Law School Vivek serves on the international advisory council of the Commonwealth Human Rights Initiative, the advisory board of the evaluation firm ID Insight, and the governing boards of the International Senior Lawyers Project and the public entrepreneurship organization Res Publica. Award-winning sociologist and educator D. Michael Lindsay is the eighth president of Gordon College. A dedicated teacher with a passion for Christian higher education, he has lectured on five continents and is committed to raising awareness of the value of a Gordon education around the globe. View from the Top, Dr. Lindsay’s most recent book, was released in May 2014. It reports the findings of his 10-year PLATINUM Study, the largest-ever interview-based study of senior organizational leaders—including former Presidents Carter and Bush, and hundreds of CEOs at the nation’s largest corporations and nonprofits—and has garnered media attention around the country. President Lindsay’s Pulitzer-nominated book, Faith in the Halls of Power, was listed in Publishers Weekly’s “Best Books of 2007,” and his work has been profiled in hundreds of media outlets worldwide, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, CNN and Fox News Channel.

President Lindsay is a strong advocate for Christian leadership as defined by a commitment to excellence and service, both hallmarks of the Gordon experience. He has introduced two new programs at Gordon designed to inspire and mentor this next generation of thoughtful Christian leaders. The Gordon Presidential Fellows program, now in its second year, is the only one of its kind modeled after the highly selective White House Fellowship. The program provides a group of talented Gordon students the opportunity to develop their leadership potential through unique exposure to senior leaders, substantive work assignments with a member of the President’s Cabinet, and horizon-broadening educational opportunities. In the summer of 2013, President Lindsay introduced the Elevate program at Gordon College, a weeklong “leadership lab” through which high-achieving high school students from around the world can advance their leadership potential.

Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, President Lindsay holds graduate degrees in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and Wycliffe Hall at Oxford. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University. President Lindsay and his wife, Rebecca, are both Phi Beta Kappa graduates of Baylor University. Rebecca is also a published author and educator and serves Gordon as the Ambassador for the College. The Lindsays live on campus with their three daughters.

Alison_Levine

Alison Levine is an adventurer, explorer and mountaineer. She has climbed the highest peak on every continent, served as the team captain of the first American Women’s Everest Expedition, and skied across the Arctic Circle to the geographic North Pole. In January 2008 she made history as the first American to complete a 600-mile traverse from west Antarctica to the South Pole following the route of legendary explorer Reinhold Messner. Levine completed this arduous journey on skis while hauling 150 pounds of her gear and supplies in a sled harnessed to her waist. In May 2010 she completed the Adventure Grand Slam – climbing the 7 Summits (highest peak on each continent) and skiing to both Poles, an accomplishment fewer than 30 people in the world can claim. Her success in extreme environments is noteworthy given she has had 3 heart surgeries and suffers from a neurological disease that causes the arteries that feed her fingers and toes to collapse in cold weather, leaving her at extreme risk for frostbite.

Alison is the subject of the PBS documentary Living Courageously and has made numerous appearances on The Today Show, Good Morning America, CNN, CNBC, FOX, CBS’ Evening News, and other national programs. She is featured prominently in the book More Than 85 Broads. Her accomplishments are also featured in other books including Smart Move and In Extremis Leadership. Her story has been the subject of articles in Oprah Magazine, National Geographic, Entrepreneur, Sports Illustrated, Outside, and other publications.

In addition to having tackled some of the most extreme environments in the outdoors, Levine has also spent more than two decades in the business world. Her professional career has encompassed healthcare, technology and finance. After earning her MBA from Duke University she moved to New York to work for investment banking firm Goldman Sachs. In 2003, she left Wall Street to serve as deputy finance director for Arnold Schwarzenegger in his successful bid to become Governor of California. Levine spent three years as an adjunct professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point in the Department of Behavioral Sciences & Leadership. She serves on the advisory board of the CoachK/Duke University Center on Leadership & Ethics and is a strategic advisor for the Thayer Leader Development Group at West Point. In 2005, she founded the Climb High Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of jobless women in Africa by training them to be trekking guides and porters in their local mountains so they will have the skills to earn a sustainable living wage through climbing-related tourism. 111110-M-KS211-00Sgt. Dakota Meyer is the third living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War, and the first living United States Marine in 41 years to be so honored. Born and raised in Columbia, Sgt. Meyer enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 2006 after graduating from Green County High School. He completed his basic training at Parris Island Recruit Training Depot later that year. A school-trained sniper and highly skilled Marine infantryman, Sgt. Meyer deployed twice to combat duty. In 2007, he deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom; and in 2009-10, he deployed to Afghanistan for Operation Enduring Freedom.

In September 2011, President Obama awarded Sgt. Meyer the Medal of Honor — the highest military decoration awarded by the United States government — in recognition of his acts of extraordinary valor on Sept. 8, 2009. Over the course of a six-hour firefight, without regard for his own personal safety, Sgt. Meyer repeatedly braved enemy fire in eastern Afghanistan to find and save fellow members of his embedded training team. Wounded by shrapnel, Sgt. Meyer entered the kill zone four times to evacuate 13 Marines and soldiers and 23 Afghan soldiers. On his fifth trip in, Sgt. Meyer recovered the bodies of three missing Marines and a Navy corpsman killed in the battle: 1st Lt. Michael Johnson, Staff Sgt. Aaron Kenefick, Hospital Corpsman Third Class James R. Layton and Gunnery Sgt. Edwin Wayne Johnson Jr. Following the battle, Army Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth W. Westbrook later died of wounds he sustained. Sgt. Dakota Meyer completed his active duty in 2010 and now serves in the Individual Ready Reserve of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Since returning to civilian life, Sgt. Meyer continues to work to tell the stories of the Marines with whom he served.
